What is impotence?
Male impotence, also known as erectile dysfunction (ED), is the inability of a man
to achieve or maintain an erection firm enough to have sex. Though impotence can occur at any
age, it mostly strikes the middle-aged men. According to NAMCS, nearly 22 out of every 1000
males living in the United States experienced the erectile dysfunction in 1999.However, impotence
is not a natural part of aging, and it is different from other sexual disorders, such as problems
with ejaculation, orgasm, and lack of sexual desire. The following article explores the causes,
possible treatment and prevention of the erectile dysfunction (male impotence).
The middle-aged men may need more stimulation to get an erection and more time between erections,
but they still have to be able to get an erection and enjoy sex. The erectile dysfunction is signed
when the inability to maintain an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse reaches at least 25
percent of the time. Some individuals experience chronic and complete erectile dysfunction (impotence);
others have partial or brief erections. It's important to take erectile trouble seriously because it
can be a sign of a more serious health problem.
Causes of impotence
Erectile dysfunction has many causes, and most of them are treatable. The most common causes of erectile dysfunction include:
- Diabetes (high blood sugar level)
- Obesity
- Heart diseases
- Atherosclerosis (arteries hardening)
- Cardiovascular diseases (commonly caused by atherosclerosis)
- High blood pressure (hypertension)
- Metabolic syndrome (unhealthy cholesterol and triglyceride levels and insulin resistance)
Psychological factors may also cause erectile dysfunction. The common psychological factors include:
- Fatigue
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Stress
- Low self-esteem
- Fear of sexual failure
- Problems in your relationship with your sexual partner
Other causes of erectile dysfunction:
- Some prescription medicines. These medicines include many used to treat hypertension, tranquilizers,
antihistamines, antidepressants, and weight loss medicines. These medicines include
Inderal (Propranolol),
Elavil (Amitriptyline),
Reglan (Metoclopramide),
Indocin (Indomethacin),
Lopid (Gemfibrozil) and some others.
If you experience erectile dysfunction while taking these medicines, ask your doctor to take you off that medicine or give you a different one
- Prostate cancer treatments: Casodex (Bicalutamide), Eulexin (Flutamide)
- Multiple sclerosis
- Hormonal disorders (hormones get out of balance, for example low testosterone level)

- Tobacco smoking
- Some neurological conditions (Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease)
- Surgery, Radiation Therapy
- Nerve or spinal cord damage
- Prolonged bicycling
Moreover, impotence can be caused by some deseases which affect immune system, for example angina, pneumonia, Peyronie's disease and heart attacks.
Impotence treatments
If you suspect you may have erectile dysfunction, it is important to advise your physician.
The doctor can perform a variety of tests to identify the reason of your problem and refer you
to a specialist if needed. Once the cause is identified, there are several treatments to consider:
- Phosphodiesterase (PDE) inhibitors. These oral medicines are known as impotence treatments that improve a blood flow to penis. They include:
- Sildenafil: Viagra, Viagra soft tabs, Viagra Professional, Viagra jelly, Kamagra. Sildenafil
is a generic name of Viagra manufactured by Pfizer. It was first produced in 1998 and since then became an anti-ED bestseller. Viagra responds in 30 minutes and
lasts for 4 hours after intake.
- Tadalafil: Cialis, Cialis soft tabs, Cialis Professional, Cialis jelly. Tadalafil
is a generic name of Cialis patented by Eli Lilly. It responds in 30 minutes and lasts as long as 36 hours after intake.
- Vardenafil: Levitra. Vardenafil is a generic name of Levitra that was developed by Bayer. Levitra responds in 30 minutes and lasts for 5 hours after intake.
- Testosterone: the medications that increase testosterone levels in blood.
- Intracavernosal injections (injecting medications into the corpora cavernosae)
- Vacuum constrictive devices for the penis, penile prostheses, intraurethral suppositories
- Psychotherapy, treating depression, anxiety, etc.
- Life style improvements: quitting smoking, exercising, sports, etc.
Although some men might have difficulties speaking with their doctors about erectile troubles,
it's important to seek a treatment for impotence. In most cases, erectile dysfunction can be
successfully treated just with a blue Viagra pill. Also, consult your doctor if the therapy or
medication prescribed to treat impotence isn't working for you and don't try to make
changes from prescribed doses.
